Each sport has its own set of needs and boundaries to retain prowess, and it would be contrary to the baseball athlete to be trained in such a way that profits arbitrary ability, or profits any other sport than baseball. Each sport needs its own specific sets of goals and restrictions as to profit the sport specific athlete.
 
Ignoring the significant differences in each sport can result in conditioning fast twitch muscles to slow down, or a sacrifice in Range of Motion in order to simply handle more weight.
 
I.E. - if a pitcher loses a quarter of an inch in range of motion in the throwing shoulder from bench press too much it can consequently result in a permanent and significant loss of both speed and control.
